Aquarium

is the name of one of the CIP pools of the FIM. The room owes its name to its glass front.

Apps

Several apps exist for the Mensa on different platforms. All of them offer at least the current week’s menu. Only for Android is there an app for the sports centre with an overview of the sports offered and dates. The official Passau app offers city maps, a list of pubs and provides information about city tours, events and even parking garage reservations.

AStA/Speaker Council

The General Students’ Committee is the student representative body at university level. It consists of four to six representatives elected by the student parliament, the student senate members and other staff members.

Audimax

The largest lecture hall on a campus. Ours (lecture hall 10) is located in the building with the clock tower directly opposite the FIM.

Counselling interview

An interview with an FIM professor of your choice, in which you will be advised of any problems in your course of studies.

Abbreviation for the degree “Bachelor of Science”.

Campus blog

At blog.uni-passau.de you can find current information about campus life. Every member of the university has the opportunity to register and write their own articles using the ZIM identifier.

Cafe

Important place to get food and coffee in the Audimax, in the Mensa building, in the WiWi as well as in the Nikolakloster (Kulturcafete).

CampusCard

Since summer semester 2015, this card combines a canteen card, photocopying card, access card for FIM, sports centre and underground car park and counts as a bus ticket and student ID.

Campus portal

The online portal for exam administration, registration for exams, grade certificates and much more.

CIP Pool

Meeting place and workroom for FIM students in the basement of the FIM. “CIP” stands for “Computer Investment Programme”.

Dean

Heads a faculty together with the Prodekan and the Studiendekan, with which many tasks in various committees are connected.

Eduroam

Uniform WLAN access at many international universities. Enables the use of the ZIM identifier or certificate to log on to the WLAN of other universities.

Evaluation

Every semester you have the opportunity to anonymously evaluate courses and lecturers. The feedback is taken very seriously by the faculty management, so this is the most powerful instrument of direct student influence. The results can be viewed by all students in the Dean’s Office. FSinfo also conducts evaluations at irregular intervals.

EXA

EXA is part of the campus portal and replaces HISQIS as the examination administration system. In some cases, however, HISQIS must still be used.

Designates all students of a faculty.

Women’s Network for Computer Science

The Women’s Network organises various lectures and excursions every semester. These are - as the name might mistakenly suggest - not only intended for women, but just as interesting for men.

Person who has a great interest in technical and fictional topics.

Hiwi (Student Assistant)

If you are looking for a little extra income and would like to gain an insight into the work of the departments, you can apply for one of the numerous student assistantships at the FIM. The best thing to do is to ask the chair of your choice.

HISQIS

The online portal for exam administration, registration for exams and grade certificates. Is only used for expiring degree programmes and older examination regulations.

Flood

If you live in Passau, you will experience one or two floods over the course of time. In the 2013 semester, the situation was particularly catastrophic. If you are interested, just google “Passau räumt auf”.

IEEE Student Branch Passau

The IEEE Student Branch Passau organises numerous lectures, workshops and other events and thus serves, among other things, as a contact point for professional development. It is also a close partner of FSinfo, for example at the Grillfeier or the TmN-Party.

Innwiese

Popular place for barbecuing and sunbathing in front of the Philo.

ISA

The Innstegaula (ISA) is the red brick building next to the Innwiese.

ITZ (IT Centre)

Building directly behind the FIM, where many courses and exercises take place. Furthermore, numerous computer science chairs are located there.

Cultural café

The cafe in the Nikolakloster regularly hosts cultural events on Friday evenings.

LaTeX

Text typesetting system with built-in macro language, which is mostly used in the natural sciences instead of Word to create documents.

Leberkäs Welcome

Traditional welcome of the Quietschies by the university and the city at the beginning of each winter semester. As the name suggests, there is liver cheese, drinks and also a vegetarian snack. ;)

Mensa

The Mensa offers several different dishes every day ranging from €2.00 to €6.00. Sometimes there are also more expensive special offers. Tip: Own command “mensa” in the CIP-Pool

O-week

The so-called orientation week takes place every semester one week before lectures begin. It serves to welcome Quietschies to the university and provide them with some information.

Upper seminar

An event held regularly at various departments in which Bachelor’s and Master’s students, as well as academic staff, present their work. Interested students can gain an insight into current research topics of the chairs here.

Gate

If you ever lose something, just ask the porter.

Philo

Abbreviation for the Philosophicum (building) or designation for students of the Faculty of Philosophy. Also our “chicks” at the TmN party.

Decides which events are creditable in which subjects.

Examination protocols

Available from the student council. These can be requested by email to klausuren@fsinfo.uni-passau.de. Important: Help us to keep our collection up to date with your own memory protocols!

Quietschie

This is what first-year students are jokingly called in Passau. Since they are usually not so familiar with the place at the beginning of their studies, they get lost in the wrong lecture hall/room. The squeaky chairs give them their nickname.

By transferring the semester fee at the end of the semester, you are “re-registered” for the next one.

Mock examinations

Examinations in courses that cannot be credited in one’s own degree programme, but can be taken for a Schein with the final grade after permission from the relevant professor. These grades are neither in the transcript nor in the campus portal.

Student Senate members

The Senate is one of the most important bodies at the university - it is here that groundbreaking decisions are made for the direction of the university. In addition to the non-public meetings of the senate, the student senate members also stand up for your interests in the university council and, of course, in the student parliament.

Dean of Students

Supports the Dean of the faculty in the area of planning courses, ensuring teaching quality and teaching evaluation.

Study plan

Describes in which semester the respective lectures are heard. Do not confuse with the timetable.

Student Parliament / Student Convention

The elected representatives of the various political university groups, the four student councils and the two student senate members meet every fortnight in the convention or StuPa to discuss current university policy issues and motions and, if necessary, to pass the latter after voting. The meetings are public and are announced on the campus-blog. See also university-politics.

Stud.IP

The learning platform of the University of Passau operated by ZIM at studip.uni-passau.de and the corresponding open source project at studip.de. Here you can register for your courses, create your timetable and download course documents.

StuPO

The Study and Examination Regulations is the “contract” that you enter into with the university at the beginning of your studies. It forms the framework conditions for your studies.

Term used to describe a circumstance that is considered understandable and simple for everyone. Gladly used to avoid proof (“The rest is trivial then…”).

Practice boxes

Letterboxes that are used to hand in exercise sheets. They are located right next to room IM 030 in the FIM. Since Corona, many exercise sheets can be handed in online.

VPN (Virtual Private Network)

Used to connect to the university network and CampusWLAN or for external use of university-internal services. Tutorials and help can be found on the ZIM homepage.

Weekend of Code

Well-known programming event at the FIM, organised by the IEEE Student Branch. For one weekend, projects are developed in your favourite programming language in the CIP-Pool.

ZIM

The Centre for IT and Media Management is located in the FIM building. It can be found on the first floor above the three lecture halls and the ZIM computer pools.

ZKK

The Centre for Careers and Skills provides support in career planning and job search, offers seminars on [key competencies](#key competencies) and advises on scholarships for stays abroad, for example.

ZMK

The Centre for Media and Communication is located between FIM and Mensa and is the newest building on campus. Facilities include television and sound studios, video and multimedia rooms and an eLearning lab.
